PB3A

For my PB3A I chose to examine a scholarly, peer-reviewed, academic publication that has to do with college student’s drinking and partying habits. This topic is close to home for myself and the other student’s at any university now a days. Being ranked one of the top party schools in the nation, UCSB and the neighboring town of Isla Vista take on that stereotype and go crazy with drinking and partying almost everyday of the week. The topic is a very interesting as it examines the ins and outs of what it is like to be a college in the party scene that exists in today’s culture.
To gear this not so exciting genre of scholarly articles towards a younger audience, I am choosing to use a piece of media that just about everyone under the age of thirty knows about. Using the Meme generator that we examined earlier on in PB1B, I intend to create a few different memes that help to convey what is being talked about in the original scholarly article. Memes help to take a serious thing, in this case college students and their drinking habits, and make it into somewhat of a joke. By using funny pictures and pairing it with text, memes will help to translate this scholarly text into something that is more tailored towards a younger audience.
When thinking of what can I use to change the research-based genre into a genre more molded for the tastes of an older audience, the idea of a informative pamphlet popped right into my head. The term “older audience” can be looked at from many different perspectives. I am thinking that pamphlets are a very common thing. There is a different pamphlet for any given topic. From a doctor’s office, to an informational seminar, they all use pamphlets to give information about a certain subject. I will examine multiple different informational pamphlets before constructing my own so that I can really get a feel for what I want mine to look like. I will also change the type of vocabulary that I use in the pamphlet as compared to the memes that I create. The pamphlet compared to the memes will offer a completely view of the scholarly text.

Overall I am very excited about this project. This project is geared up to be my favorite writing project of the quarter. I am looking forward to translating the scholarly, academic publication into two different genres, one for a younger audience, and the other for another one. I am looking forward to creating my own project and not having to follow a certain prompt. This project is going to be great.

  1. Alden, I really like your proposal for WP3. I think you picked a really good topic and that you have a lot to work with in terms of genre for this topic. The meme generator could be particularly useful in conveying your message as it involves the use of pictures and works so you can use to mediums to convey your message. I also like the idea of an informational pamphlet. I think, like the meme generator, you can use pictures to really get your point across. I think the only question I have for you is maybe to tighten up your focus on the subject a little bit more. Partying is such a large topic, and maybe you can focus on one aspect of it. Great job man… I really think this is going to turn out well for you!

  2. Alden,
I think that you have a very good idea going for you. The drinking relates very well to our society as college students. I think that your ideas for the older generation of student is a excellent idea. the older generation is leaning towards pamphlets and is a great call. For the younger audience, memes are funny. I love to look at memes, and I think that its a great idea. You focus directly on the point at what you are going for in your paper. I feel if you narrow your topic directly on one point of college drinking you would be more successful. Good luck with this and have fun.

  3. I like the topic about college students' drinking and party habits. It is close to our daily life as you said. To be honest, meme generator is also one of genre that I think of to place academic essay into younger audience under thirty. the reason is straightforward like you said. Funny pictures and pairing it with text certainly interests teenagers. Beside, meme is one of the popular type of writing among them. Some older generations may fail to find the essence of it. It fits perfectly to teenagers in order to introduce an academic essay. An informative pamphlet is quite new to me. It can fit older audience like you said, because it exhibits the academic essay’s idea in a more formal way to them. However, it may work better if you state which specific audience you are referring to.

  5. I think of the posts I've looked at, your topic might be the most relevant to our daily lives. I think its a really good idea to present information that might change the habits of the students in IV in a way that is also age-relevant. I think memes are the perfect choice because they are short and easy to read and are usually humorous, which might offer a nice balance for such a serious topic. I think the pamphlet could be made super interesting if you take the time to make a nicely laid out, clean pamphlet, because that's more likely to sway an older audience than the humor and relatability provided by memes.

  6. Alden,

Nowadays?! How about the last-50-years-of-American-college-adays? And probably even more than that...!

Alright, so one question I have is: are you sure you want to make this article a "joke" (meme) for a younger audience? If so, why? (And how young are we talking?) Does that conflict with some of the conventions of younger audiences? And couldn't/wouldn't that misrepresent what the authors were trying to accomplish in this article?

If it sounds like I'm trying to turn you off from doing this, I'm not: what I want to do is to make you think deliberately about the (translated) choices you're making. You've got to have a reason for doing what you're doing here. "What with why."
